Sitting in for Climate Justice: Photos From the Action
Over 100 students from the Barnard Columbia Solidarity Network (BCSN) mobilized yesterday in solidarity with 40 Columbia Divest for Climate Justice (CDCJ) organizers and supporters who occupied Low Library, demanding that Columbia divest from fossil fuels. 16 students stayed overnight in Low, risking school sanctions and arrest, and occupied the president’s office when it re-opened this morning. CDCJ plans to remain there peacefully until their demands are met, or they are forcibly moved.
This sit-in marks an extraordinary feat of organizing across numerous groups on campus. Students from Mobilized African Diaspora (MAD), Divest Barnard, CDCJ, Student Worker Solidarity (SWS), No Red Tape (NRT), Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) organized various actions across campus before converging on Low steps around 4 p.m. 40 CDCJ activists entered Low Library while members of BCSN staged a rally outside.
